Sandbox Spotlight Week 2

abstract2Our next Sandbox Spotlight Student is Tessa Wegman, a graphic design sophomore from Chicago with a passion for graphic art and a fluid but cartoony aesthetic. She says, “My style has changed so much it’s hard to pinpoint what my aesthetic is, but definitely something that is enjoyable to look at. I try to stay away from the realistic approach…”

This fluidity has allowed Tessa to explore multiple subjects and styles in her art, and influenced her to recently switch majors. And while we will miss her in ComArtSci, it seems as though she has a real enthusiasm and noticeable talent for representing her perspective in a way that we can’t argue with pursuing. She says that the biggest need she feels in education is support, “Supporting other people’s craft is so important. Coming together as a community with so many different creative minds and ideas is such a unique and rewarding experience.”

Collaboration is something we want to encourage and facilitate for all Michigan State students, so it’s great to hear that it is valued. Ms. Wegman has already been applying these ideas about collaboration into her efforts to build a portfolio. “I actually did a cover design for Lil Yatchy and Ca$h Out over the summer, it was the first big name person I’ve worked for and it was such a great experience. I really enjoy being able to use my talent in collaboration with other artists and their talents.”

This kind of initiative shows promising things for Tessa and we wish her all the luck in the world pursuing a graphic design career  – not that she’ll need it! Her advice is straightforward: “Follow your dreams. As cliche as it is, struggling to find a job in something you have a passion for is a whole lot better than struggling to maintain a job you dread. Do whatever makes you happy.”

Simple, smart, and sensible.
